The Turkey Tournament was held Saturday morning on November 17th at the Riverfront YMCA. A total of 29 players entered the event, which is a great turnout for a small tournament.
There were a few new faces in the crowd. Jay Polson, in his first time ever playing handball, was partnered with Joey Petersen. Donny Meeks, who played a couple games of 3-wall this past summer, was partnered with Jesus Moran. And John Derbish, who recently moved here from Florida, has a couple years of experience and played with David Dickson.
It was also great to see some Flood brothers back on the court again. However, these Flood bros, Kurt and Ty, are about 30 years younger than the pair we used to watch play. Its clear the younger Floods are a much nicer pair than their dad Scott Flood and uncle Steve Flood. Maybe there is hope with the younger generation.
Another young player, Dru Jorgensen, partnered with veteran Bruce Kempkes. Dru was able to run circle around opponent Scott McGlothlen, just like his father does.
The teams were divided into two pools called Legend and Leaders. Teams played one game to 15 within their pool. The teams with the best record within each pool then played a championship game to 21. It was Joey Petersen and Jay Polson that defeated Jesus Moran and Donny Meeks in a close one, 21-19, to take home the Turkey for Thanksgiving dinner.
The tournament did not finish without protest however. Partners Jill Kempkes and Ned Jorgensen also went undefeated in their pool play, but ran out of time to play Jesus and Donny. Jill and Ned are awaiting the decision from tournament director, David Dickson. If the decision in unfavorable to Jill and Ned, then we’ll take it to court… the handball court that is. We’ll take on ANY challengers!
A big thank you for Tournament Director, David Dickson, and father Wells Dickson. They donated this years Turkey’s for the tournament. Make sure you all tell them thanks as well.
Ned Jorgensen
why would the Dickson brothers buy anything for this motley crew of players
Wow ! Could that be our own Bruce Johnson playing the right side and allowing his partner to hit a shot ? The times they are a changing!
