The 2013 football Super Bowl pits brother against brother. In the Des Moines Super Bowl handball tournament, there also were family blood lines competing in some hard fought matches… however, in handball they were brother in arms instead of competing against each other.  Family teams were Dickinson father & son, Petersen father & son, and the Craigers brothers…with each team having some success.
The Craigerheads (Mark & Fritz) won the Under Age 97 division. After a tougher than expected 1st round match against newcomers Devin O’Neil & Jess Richey, the Craiger bros defeated Tom Schoelerman & Jed Mengel in the finals, 21-17, 21-16
In the Over Age 98 division, a tag team combo of Wells & David Dickson with Art Kossack defeated favorites Lew Bolton & Bob Ewald, 21-14, 21-9.  Kossack also won the consolation with teammate Maddog John Gruening against Dave Gutfruend & Todd Mendenhall.
The Open  Doubles division included all strong and evenly matched teams where any one of them  could have been slotted as the #1 seed… including The Two Guys Named Jim team (Jim Hartzell & Jim Robertson), who are nearly double the combined age of the other teams, and were still competitive. In the Open consolation, team McMex (Scott McGlothlen & Jesus Moran) did defeat the Two Guys Named Jim, 21-13, 21-18.
Teams in the Open Finals were #1 seed John Ayers & Jeff Spence against #2 seed Terry Peterson & Joey Peterson. As the match went on, both teams relied more on an “I” formation with top Iowa players John Ayers & Joey Peterson battling out shots & strategy. The final score was 21-17, 2-21, 11-7.
Thank you to Wells Dickson for donating the t-shirts for this year’s tournament… and for specially recognizing those ‘P’ Award players on the tournament shirts. Competing against those players always reminds us of why they won the award.
